Hear from some of our volunteers
Dan Flatt
(BA Modern Languages with Management with a Year Abroad, 2012)
"I absolutely love being an Alumni Volunteer. It’s been such a great way of keeping in touch with lots of friends from my time at university but also meet some truly inspiring people from all over the world that have graduated from the University over the decades. It’s such a warm feeling, remaining part of the University community... I have been involved with the Alumni Association Committee, mentoring, hosting alumni quiz nights, representing the graduate community in the academic procession at graduation to even hosting the Alumni Dinner. It’s been so fantastic to get involved with such a variety of things. I would thoroughly recommend other graduates volunteer as well."
Elpida Vounzoulaki
(PhD Health Sciences, 2023)
"Volunteering as an alumni for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ has been an incredibly rewarding experience! Through volunteering I have the opportunity to stay connected with the university community and also give back in a meaningful way. I would highly recommend to other alumni to get involved in volunteering as it is a brilliant way of supporting the next generation of Leicester graduates and making a difference!"
Arnaud Melilli
(BA European Studies, 2011)
"Volunteering for Leicester is about more than nostalgia - it’s about stewardship. Through hosting events, supporting graduations, and serving on the Alumni Association Committee, I’ve seen how alumni become lifelines for the institution that gave us our futures. As an international alumni, I’ll never forget how Leicester transformed a French student with shaky English into someone who could champion its values worldwide. That’s why I volunteer: to ensure today’s students get the same transformative chances, no matter how strong the headwinds blow."
Lynda Wight
(BSc Biological Sciences, 1978)
"Being a volunteer for the University has been a great way to maintain a relationship with the institution and the city where I simply had the best time. The greatest satisfaction I had was playing a part in establishing the Alumni Awards to acknowledge the wealth of talent and achievement in our alumni community. If you have fond memories of your time at university, or feel gratitude for the opportunities your Leicester degree opened up; or if you have a passion for helping young people to become Citizens of Change for good in the world, then you are the sort of person the University will want on its volunteer team! All kinds of skills are valuable, so you don’t have to be world-famous. Everyone can have something to contribute from their life experience!"

Current opportunities
Mentor a student
Our Global Alumni Mentoring Scheme launched in March 2025 and we’re looking for more alumni to sign up as mentors! This is a great opportunity for our alumni to mentor students through a variety of professional and pastoral mentoring support options: from interview skills, career guidance and leadership, to confidence building, public speaking skills and moving to a new country. Mentoring a student is a fantastic way to utilise your skills and experience to support a current Â鶹ÊÓƵ student online across a six-month period.
If you are interested in being involved with our mentoring scheme, please email alumni.relations@leicester.ac.uk to register your interest.
Event volunteers
We are always looking for alumni volunteers to support our graduation alumni engagement activity, whether this be on campus meeting the next generation of alumni during graduation week or by providing digital assets for alumni promotion and future marketing materials. Graduations take place each January and July over a number of days. We are also looking for volunteers to support our recruitment events during Open Days and Offer Holder Days. This may be as an event steward, delivering a workshop or sharing your memories of student life at Leicester. If you are interested in any of these, please contact us at alumni.relations@leicester.ac.uk for an informal chat.
Festival of Change
Since launching the Festival of Change in October 2020, over 1,300 alumni from 28 countries have joined us for a Festival of Change event. With 91% of alumni saying that they would recommend the event to a friend, we want to let you know about our programme of exciting events we have coming up. Details subject to change. View our past events.

Alumni in Residence
The Alumni in Residence programme brings talented alumni volunteers and final year Â鶹ÊÓƵ students together so that alumni can share their career experiences and advice. Through a combination of one-to-one appointments and small interactive networking sessions, the programme is designed to inspire students at the start of their career journeys, support their career development, build their commercial awareness and increase their confidence.
This is a one-off volunteering opportunity that runs at different points throughout the year (although you are welcome to sign up for further sessions). Time commitment is approximately 4 hours and can be completed virtually or in person.
For more information about this programme and how to sign up please contact alumni.relations@leicester.ac.uk.
Career guidance
Have you faced challenges through your career and would like to share how you overcame these? After graduating did your career take a different path than planned? Could you give an inspiring talk to students about your career history? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we would love to hear from you! Our colleagues from across the University are often looking for alumni volunteers to speak with students, and share inspiring and motivational experiences with them. Involvement may include being part of a discussion panel, hosting a workshop or delivering a talk, with options available for in-person and virtual involvement. If you’re interested, please contact alumni.relations@le.ac.uk.
Employability career talks
Deliver a presentation or workshop on your career and get the opportunity to meet motivated students who are keen to develop their skills to enhance their applications and prepare for life after university. There will also be a Q+A session after the presentation.
The time commitment is approximately one to two hours per talk and this can be completed virtually or in person.
Attenborough Arts Centre
Attenborough Arts Centre is a socially and civically-engaged public cultural venue based at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ, producing visual arts, live performance, learning, community and research programmes. Volunteers are important members of the Attenborough Arts Centre front of house team. They are people who share a love of the arts, giving their time to contribute to the continued success of the centre.
The Centre is currently looking for Gallery Assistant Volunteers for their next exhibition. As an AAC Volunteer, you will be part of an organisation with decades of experience in providing performances, courses, workshops and activities for children and families. You would be a public face for the AAC, providing support and assistance within our gallery spaces. Ensuring our customers and visitors have a positive and enjoyable experience during their visit and aiding in their desire to return.
IntoUniversity
IntoUniversity provides local learning centres where young people are inspired to achieve. At each local centre IntoUniversity offers an innovative programme that supports young people from disadvantaged neighbourhoods to attain their chosen aspiration, including further and higher education, employment and work-based training. Leicester’s IntoUniversity centre is a collaborative partnership between IntoUniversity, the Â鶹ÊÓƵ and De Montfort University.
Opportunities available include Academic Support Volunteers (open to all alumni) and University Student Mentoring (only open to alumni who have graduated within the last five years). Both volunteering opportunities are in-person and based at our local IntoUniveristy centre in Leicester.
To find out more information, please and email alumni.relations@leicester.ac.uk for more details about the Leicester opportunities.
Governors for Schools
The Â鶹ÊÓƵ has partnered with the charity Governors for Schools to offer exciting and rewarding opportunities for alumni to apply to be school governors within Leicestershire and Rutland as well as the wider UK. School governors offer strategic guidance and work to challenge existing processes to drive school improvement. Governors for Schools offer great training and support to help you succeed in the role meaning that you don’t need to have prior experience of being on a board to apply.
. Or email alumni.relations@leicester.ac.uk if you would like a further chat about the role.
Volunteering documents
If you have any other volunteering ideas that you are interested in, such as giving a guest lecture, please do contact us (alumni.relations@leicester.ac.uk) and we would be more than happy to discuss this further with you.
