Discovering together

Heritage and Culture

We are researching the issues that matter

Our research spans the full spectrum of human experience - from uncovering ancient history to reimagining the future of heritage institutions.

In 2013, we made global headlines with the discovery of King Richard III’s remains in Leicester city centre. The same pioneering team continues to push boundaries, now exploring major historical mysteries such as the origins of the Black Death.

Our academics are reshaping how we tell stories. At the heart of this work is the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries, working with partners to make heritage more inclusive, accessible, and relevant to today’s society. Our commitment to innovation was recognised with a Times Higher Education Research Project of the Year Award for the Dickens Code, led by Dr Claire Wood. This ground-breaking initiative used crowd-sourced transcription to decode two of Charles Dickens’s mysterious shorthand texts.

Our impact

We explore what defines us. From arts and culture to discovering dinosaurs, our researchers examine what has shaped our society as we know it.

We're proud to be awarded University of the year but this is more than an accolade, it's part of our DNA. Discover some of the reasons why the Â鶹ÊÓƵ has been awarded University of the year.
