About the Â鶹ÊÓƵ

Zhao Junwei

Staff, fellow students and friends at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ are deeply saddened by the passing of Junwei. At this distressing time, we request all to respect their time to grieve without social media scrutiny.

The University has learned with sadness of the death of one of our postgraduate students, Zhao Junwei. Junwei joined the Â鶹ÊÓƵ family in September 2019 and was studying for an MA in Media and Advertising. He was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary where he passed away from meningitis on 26 March 2020.

The Head of the School of Media, Communication and Sociology, Dr Ian Somerville, writes:

“It is with great sorrow and shock that the staff in the School learned of Junwei’s death. We remember Junwei as a quiet and thoughtful person and a hard-working and intelligent student. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, his friends and classmates at this time.”

His Programme Director, Dr Giovanna Puppin, writes:

“I still can’t believe this happened. Junwei was a diligent and scrupulous student. His eyes and smile mirrored his kindness and sweetness. My thoughts go to his family and friends in China. Here in Leicester, he is already missed by all his lecturers and fellow students.”

Many of his fellow students wished to pay tribute to Junwei. Here are some of their thoughts:

“You are a sweet, warm-hearted boy, I wish you will fly and find peace up there, just like a dove. God loves you, we all love you.” (Lan Weixi)

“I will always remember that sweetness of yours, your smile, and you trying to help the teachers with their computers. I can’t believe that this happened to you. If I had the chance, I would wish to be in the same classroom with you as classmates, again.” (Luo Yini)

“Jovi (Junwei), that’s what I call him usually, is one of few boys I knew here. The first time I met him was on ELTU class where teacher asked us to make self-introductions in peers and Jovi was my peer. He was very friendly, polite and nice. And then we had more seminars together, so sometimes we walked home together after class. As far as I can remember each time I asked him where he was going, the answer would be gym or library. He was a person who knew clearly what he wanted to do in life, which I don’t see in many people. I can still remember how happy the time Jovi and I spent together was. He was a good friend as well as a very kind person. We will never forget him. May he rest in peace.” (Nie Shuang)
