Civil Dispute Resolution Methods
Module code: LW7006
The aim of this course is to familiarise you with the main dispute resolution processes employed to resolve non-criminal disputes, including court litigation, mediation, arbitration, consumer redress (e.g. the ombudsman model) and Online Dispute Resolution (ODR). A key focus of the module is the interaction between English courts and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods, particularly mediation and negotiation. We will also examine contemporary developments, exploring the application of Artificial Intelligence to the dispute resolution field and the emergence of unregulated dispute resolution systems on the Dark Web. You will develop an analytical understanding of the different formal and informal DR methods and the circumstances that make them appropriate for resolving private civil disputes.
