An Introduction to International Space Law

Module code: LW7025

This module critically evaluates the treaty regime for international space law within the context of the rules and theories of public international law by placing particular emphasis on the Outer Space Treaty, which is widely accepted as the constitution for outer space. It provides an introduction to the sources and subjects of international space law, including an examination of the fundamental principles relating to the legal status of outer space and celestial bodies, the principle of non-appropriation of outer space as well as the freedom of exploration and use of outer space. It examines the role of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) as the de facto law-making forum for outer space activities. We will discuss the latest developments in international space law theory and practice, such as the lawfulness of space mining and the establishment of human settlements on celestial bodies.

As this is an emerging field of international law, 'An Introduction to International Space Law' will be a largely research-lead module. A special feature of the teaching method is the constant attention to the practical repercussions of the current and emerging legal framework for space activities.
