Human Rights and Human Wrongs: Core Principles

Module code: LW7085

This module will introduce you to some of the core principles of international human rights law with a view to demonstrating the nature of the substantive protection of human rights. Some of the principles covered include equality, non-discrimination and human dignity. We will examine the expression of these core principles through relevant conventions and treaties, such as the ICCPR, ICESCR, the Convention against Torture and the Genocide Convention. You will appraise the protection offered for fundamental human rights by relevant international and regional courts and tribunals and consider the challenges to implementing core principles through case studies. You will also engage in role-play based on real and hypothetical fact situations to explore current debates surrounding the core themes studied, including cultural relativism, the imbalance between civil-political rights and socio-economic rights, the tension between security concerns and human rights, self-determination and genocide.
