Commercialising Space

Module code: LW7086

The principal aim of this module is to provide an in-depth comprehension relating to the use of (outer) Space, particularly for commercial purposes. The module focuses on considering the past and present use of Space, whilst factoring in the future use and related opportunities vs. challenges of further commercial practices and pursuits.

Given the commercial aspect, we will take a multidisciplinary approach, which combines law/policy, business, international relation (geopolitics) and technology aspects.  As part of this, consideration will be given to international space law which is identified and examined, including the United Nations Treaties, Principles and other policy approaches relating to outer space and celestial bodies. Alongside this, we will also consider national and regional advancements.

Commercial (and technological) aspects such as space mining, appropriation of resources, space travel and satellites (plus other placements in space) form part of this module, which also includes ethical considerations – such as sustainability and liabilities.

This module is delivered by way of a workshop, flipped-style approach that combines seminars and lectures and validates understanding relating to guided research, independent studies and other tasks. This will be facilitated/supported by the use of the Blackboard virtual learning environment, including discussion boards and other interactive/research activities. There will also be the opportunity for evidence-based in-class discussions and debates.
