International Migration and Refugee Law

Module code: LW7147

This module will cover international law principles concerning the entry, residence and rights of foreign nationals in a state. The first three sessions will examine (1) the principle of state sovereignty in immigration matters, (2) international law constraints upon border control relating to persons, and (3) international law relating to the conferral and loss of nationality (citizenship). Subsequent sessions will address more specific topics: (4) comparative labour migration, (5) the implications of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in immigration law, (6) restrictions imposed by the European Convention on Human Rights upon admission and expulsion decisions, (7) the rights of foreign nationals in international law, and (8) non-discrimination against foreign nationals in respect of social and economic rights.
