Supervising Solicitor of the legal Advice Clinic

School/Department: Leicester Law School

Email: afsha.sharif@leicester.ac.uk

Profile

I am a supervising solicitor of the Legal Advice Clinic where students give free legal advice to members of the public.  My area of expertise is immigration law.  Since joining the Law School in September 2022, I have developed an immigration clinic which provides regulated legal advice to those in need, while offering students the opportunity to gain hands on practical legal experience and train as accredited advisors through the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA).

Research

My research interests are:

  • The impact of the hostile environment policies on migrant communities in the UK.
  • Access to justice for migrant communities.

Publications

Teaching

  • LW3294 Pro Bono Law in the Community (module convenor)
  • LW3291/LW3293 Legal Advice Clinic: Law in Practice (supervisor)

I also supervise extra-curricular Pro bono projects:

  • Justice for Windrush
  • Refugee Family Reunion
  • eVisa

Press and media

The Clinic’s Justice for Windrush project activities have attracted wide media attention. As the supervising solicitor of the project, I support and train students in handling complex Windrush compensation claims and navigating the immigration rules. I can offer insights and contribute to media discussions on historical injustices faced by Windrush victims and access to justice.

Awards

  • The Legal Advice Clinic won the award for Our Citizens in 2024.
  • The Legal Advice Clinic was shortlisted as a finalist for the LexisNexis Awards 2025.
