Profile
I am a specialist in Technology Law with broad research interests including: Privacy and Cyber Security; Health Law; Consumer Protection; and Intellectual Property. I am currently an Associate Professor in the Law School at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ.
I am also an Affiliate with the Bioethics Institute Ghent, Ghent University, Belgium and an Academic Affiliate with the University of Oxford’s Centre for Health, Law and Emerging Technologies (HeLEX).
I am an internationally recognised expert on the personal genomics industry (also known as direct-to-consumer genetic testing) – an area which is very topical in light of the 23andMe data breach, its subsequent class actions, insolvency, and concerns about what will happen to its consumers’ data.
I have strong interests in a number of technologies alongside my interest in personal genomics and this includes: Artificial Intelligence; the Internet of Things; and molecular communication.
I am also interested in the protection of privacy online and how privacy policies and online contracts could be improved to improve the protection of privacy and consumer rights.
Research
My research interests are broadly in the areas of Technology Law, Privacy and Data Protection, as well as Medical Law, Consumer Protection, Cyber Security, and Intellectual Property. My current research is centred around the regulation and governance of new, emerging, and future technologies, with particular emphasis on the impact of technologies on society both through my independent writing and through interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues. My work also explores the legal and ethical issues raised by technologies in both local and international contexts.
I am interested in future risks of technologies and take a critical approach to technologies, acknowledging that they are not neutral.
I have interests in several specific technologies: Personal Genomics; Artificial Intelligence including Generative Biology; Internet of Things including Wearable Tech; and Molecular Communication.
