Profile
Matthew is a Research Associate in the Social Science Applied to Healthcare Research Group (SAPPHIRE) at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ. He currently works on the SCALE-ENDO project, which aims to improve safety in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Matthew specialises in conversation analytic (CA) methods. He uses CA and related discursive approaches to investigate how latent factors and active failures influence team performance and communication within endoscopy settings.
Matthew’s main research interest is the activity of questioning, and how the design of a question can reveal the pressures or context-specific concerns that speakers navigate. He is particularly interested in question design in the context of broadcast talk. He has also conducted research with colleagues on embodied interaction and non-lexical vocalisations, which has been published in the journal Interactional Linguistics. Matthew has presented his research at several international conferences across Europe, the US, and Asia. In 2024, he was a visitor to the Centre for Language, Interaction and Culture at UCLA. He is also a member of the International Society for Conversation Analysis (ISCA).
