BAVS Talks 2025

Join us for a special event organised as part of the year-long celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the (BAVS).
Following in the tradition of the BAVS Talks series, established under the Presidency of Professor Rohan McWilliam, four inspiring Victorian Studies experts will speak on a variety of topics.
Speakers
- Professor James Mussell (University of Leeds) on '"On the Threshold": Material Media and the Revelation of Content in Wilkie Collins's The Dead Secret'
- Dr Pritika Pradhan (University of York) on 'Modernity's Marks: Details in Victorian Realism and Aestheticism'
- Professor Joanne Shattock (Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ) on 'Victorian Studies - the Long View'
- Dr Amelia Yeates (Liverpool Hope University) on 'Absorbed Women Readers in Nineteenth-Century Painting'
The papers will be followed by a Postgraduate Poster Session and Networking Reception showcasing Victorian Studies PhD research taking place in the Midlands and beyond. If you’re a postgraduate and would like to take part, check out the ‘Call for Posters’ below!
This free event is hosted by the Centre for Victorian Studies – the longest-established Centre of its kind in the UK – and generously sponsored by BAVS.

Call for Posters
We're looking for ten PhD students to showcase their work!
How to take part
To apply for a spot, please send a poster abstract (maximum 150 words) and biography (maximum 100 words) to Dr Claire Wood claire.wood@leicester.ac.uk by Thursday 29 May 2025.
Eligibility
- To take part, you must be a current postgraduate studying for your PhD at a UK-based institution.
- Interdisciplinary projects are welcome, but your research must relate to the long nineteenth century.
- You must be available on 27 June 2025 to present your poster in-person and be prepared to travel to Leicester.
- Poster printing and poster board costs will be covered by the Centre for Victorian Studies. However, you will need to cover your own cost of travel.
- If your abstract is selected, you will need to design an A1 poster (PORTRAIT) and submit it in .pdf format for printing by 19 June 2025.
Timeline
- Abstract submission: Thursday 29 May 2025, 5.00pm (BST).
- Notification of outcome: Friday 30 May 2025.
- Poster submission: 19 June 2025, 5.00pm (BST).
- Poster showcase: 27 June 2025.
