Thailand government joins forces with Â鶹ÊÓƵ to launch UK scholarship for 50 Thai students

Fifty students from Thailand will benefit from six weeks of study in the UK thanks to a scholarship programme launched by the Thai government and the Â鶹ÊÓƵ.

The University has been selected as a UK partner in the Thai Prime Minister’s One District One Scholarship. The University’s participation was announced today (Saturday 26 July) in Bangkok by the University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nishan Canagarajah, during the year of the 170th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the United Kingdom.

The announcement took place during an event, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong, which saw 50 students selected and interviewed for the scholarship positions.

Successful applicants will travel to Leicester in October for a combination of studies at the University and extra-curricular academic activities. Scholars will also enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of Leicester City Football Club’s stadium and attend one of their matches thanks to partnership working between the University and football club.

Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong said: “Today marks the beginning of a significant experience in the lives of all our young participants.

“I urge everyone to make the most of this opportunity, not just for your own benefit, but to return and help develop Thailand to keep pace with the world, avoid being left behind, and proudly compete with other nations.

“I believe this project will ignite the power of our young generation, transforming it into a force to drive Thailand towards a better future.”

President and Vice-Chancellor of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Professor Nishan Canagarajah said: “We have put together an exciting programme to offer an outstanding experience for the Prime Minister Scholarship winners. We look forward to welcoming them to Leicester and to showcasing the best our super-diverse city has to offer.

“The programme supports young people from every district of Thailand, many of whom face socioeconomic barriers, to gain international education experience. This aligns with our mission as an inclusive University.

“Support from the Thai government augments our commitment to cultivate purposeful and sustainable international partnerships. The University has a global footprint and this scholarship programme adds another exciting dimension to our deepening links with Thailand through which we will provide new educational and health benefits in both countries.”

The scholarship programme will see students learn from experts in the University’s School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. The teaching expertise in the School is underpinned by seven cutting-edge research groups in areas such as AI and machine learning, mathematics and computational modelling, trustworthy autonomous systems and methods of AI and data analytics.

The programme forms a key part of the University’s deepening relationships with Thailand which has been cemented by a senior delegation visit to the country, in July.
